Wood has a strong connection to life on Earth. The intrinsic qualities of wood, it's natural aesthetics, it's tactile invitation, transfers to us a sense of its being alive in it's essence.
The textures and colors found within the grain of the Structured Wood sculptures are specific and unique to the life history of each tree the wood originated from.
Rare and unusually fine woods selected for their origins as much as their intrinsic values are incorporated into each original piece. Select stains and color treatments are added to the "structure" to bring out color effects and enhance the unique fingerprint of the wood grain. Hand rubbed tropical rosewood and tongue oil finishes are massaged into the surfaces revealing the depths and wonders deep within the materials. A patina results that will grow rich with time.
Peter Chandler is an emerging new sculptor who has worked with wood for many years. He is already well-known in Santa Fe for being a fine craftsman with an attention to detail in his work.
His success is due to his ability to express his instinct for visual connections that are three-dimensional. During this past decade his talent was translated into "functional art" such as original furniture and other formal constructions.
His new direction is now sculpting in the wood he is so familiar with. Using geometric shapes, which by themselves might seem static, his focus is in the intersection of space and form, and the play of light and dark that this geometry stimulates. The excitement lies in responses that are evoked by the placement, size, shape, and planar position of each element.
When these elements are combined they create a playful sense of motion, an optimistic flow of energy, a suggestion of conflict, or a harmonious vision - they combine to create a language of the human experience.
